There’s nothing worse than hearing a strange noise in the middle of the night that jolts you from sleep. You quickly go through your mind anxiously trying to figure out made the noise, so you can dismiss it and go back to sleep assuring yourself that someone isn’t in the house wanting to rob or kill you. If you’re like me, the last thing you want to do is wander around the house looking to see if an uninvited stranger is lurking around.
Well, try being woken up at 3am to the tune of “The Lion Sleeps tonight” loudly blaring through your house.
In the jungle
The mighty jungle
The lion sleeps tonight
In the jungle
The quiet jungle
The lion sleeps tonight
Now, luckily Hubby was home when this happened a few nights ago and had just returned to bed from being up. He quickly got back out of bed and headed up the stairs, so I just assumed he knew why this song was suddenly blasting through our home in the middle of the night. As soon as he got to the top of the stairs, the music stopped. Relieved, I found myself drifting back to sleep but made the mistake of asking him in my horse, crackly sleeping voice what device was playing that song and why. He responded that he didn’t know.
I immediately sat up in bed and was wide awake, thanks to the rush of adrenaline that rushed through my body.
“Whatdaya mean you don’t know? You turned it off, didn’t you?” I stammered.
“No, it stopped playing on its own before I could find where the noise is coming from. Maybe it came from outside?” he suggested.
I knew there was no way that it came from outside, especially because we had all the windows closed. So of course, my mind starts to wander to think dark grueling thoughts of someone hiding behind a door upstairs with a big ghetto blaster waiting to play that creepy song again full blast before coming at us with a knife. And while I am thinking this, Hubby appears to be happily falling back to sleep.
“Can you go check the house again?” I demanded while shaking him. “There must be someone here!”
So, like a good husband, he rolled back out of bed and walked through each room trying to find the source of the Loud Lion song. I suddenly remember being outside earlier in the evening showing my mom and dad on Skype how windy it was, and couldn’t remember if I locked the door. Even though we had our rollers down that completely cover the door and all the windows, I convinced myself that someone could easily slip through the cracks, of course, carrying a big ghetto blaster. As I started to make my way downstairs, I found Hubby sitting at the kitchen in front of my computer. On came that dreaded song again, but at least he found the source: a video clip of a rather large annoying cartoon hippo singing the Lion song that Little T had found earlier on You Tube.
The only mystery remaining was that the computer lid was closed and the computer should have been in hibernation. So, why it suddenly played 30 seconds of that song at 3 o’clock in the morning, we’ll never know. I was just relieved that there wasn’t someone upstairs with a big ghetto blaster after all and I could go back to sleep. This of course, took about an hour.
And through all of this commotion, there laid Little T in between us snoring away through it all. I leaned over and whispered to Hubby “The Lion and Little T sleep tonight”.
Little T immediately sat up and looked at me with eyes wide open.
“What did you say, Mommy?”
Maybe one day he’ll read this and understand what I was talking about.

Heather – you’ve obviously watched too many horror flicks in your distant past…. The Lion Sleeps Tonight doesn’t exactly remind me of Freddy Kruger! 🙂

LOL! Actually, I can’t watch horror flicks. Last night we watched Knowing – I was totally freaked out and didn’t sleep well all night. I’d rather laugh or cry while watching a film, without my heart beating a mile a minute!

At my house it’s either the gang of teenagers in the house making noise, or the packs of coyote’s fighting in my yard for kill. Either way i just rollover, what is meant to be is meant to be
